The Big Idea of Rome

Imagine a big, busy city where one person, a king, made all the rules. That is how the city of Rome used to be. If the king wanted something, it happened. But what if everyone could help pick the leaders. What if people could work together, like a team, to make decisions. That was a brand-new, super exciting thought. I am that big idea. I am a special way for people to be in charge together.

Hello. I'm the Roman Republic. A very long time ago, on my birthday in the year 509 BCE, the people of Rome decided to try my new idea. They said goodbye to their king and started something different. They created me. Instead of a king, the people chose two leaders called consuls. The consuls were only in charge for one year, so everyone got a turn to help lead. There was also a group of wise grown-ups called the Senate who helped make good choices for the city. For nearly 500 years, I helped the people of Rome build amazing buildings and roads and become a strong and fair community. It was a happy time of working together.

Like all things, I eventually changed. Around the year 27 BCE, I grew into something new called the Roman Empire. But my most important part, my big idea, never went away. The idea that people should choose their own leaders is still used all over the world today. When grown-ups vote, they are using my idea to make their home a better place. So, my story shows that a good idea can last forever and help people everywhere work together.
