The Great Sorting Game

Do you ever sort your toys. Maybe you put all the soft teddy bears in one fuzzy pile and all the shiny, red cars in one box. It feels so nice when everything has its own special spot. That happy, sorting feeling, that's me. I am Taxonomy, and I love to help everyone put things where they belong. I am the big idea of making neat groups so we can understand our world. It's like tidying up your room, but for everything in nature.

A long, long, long time ago in a sunny place called Greece, around 350 BCE, a very smart man named Aristotle used me to sort animals. He made simple groups. One group had animals with warm, red blood, like puppies. Another group had animals without red blood, like buzzy bees. It was a good start. Then, many years later, in the year 1735, a kind man who loved flowers and bugs named Carl Linnaeus gave me a very important job. He wanted every plant and animal to have a special name. I helped him give every living thing a two-part name, like a first name and a last name. That way, a scientist in one place and a scientist far away could talk about the very same little ladybug and know exactly which one they meant.

Scientists still use me today. I help them discover new animals in the deep, blue ocean and in tall, green jungles. I help show how every living thing is connected, like one big, happy family tree. And guess what. You use me every day. When you put your colorful crayons in a rainbow line, from red to purple, that’s me. When you line up your books from the biggest one to the smallest one, you are using me, Taxonomy. You are helping to make our wonderful world neat and easy to understand.
