Imagine the big, blue ocean is feeling very sleepy. Shhhh. The water on the beach pulls way, way back, like it is taking a big, quiet breath. You can see shiny shells and little fish wiggling in the wet sand where the water used to be. It is so quiet. Then, I arrive. I am not a little, splashy wave for playing in. I am a long, powerful rush of water that travels from the deep, deep ocean all the way to the shore. I am a big surprise from the deep.

Hello. My name is Tsunami. It is a special name that comes from a place called Japan. It means “harbor wave,” because long, long ago, people saw me rush into the safe places where they kept their boats. For many years, people wondered how I was made. A very, very long time ago, in a place called ancient Greece, a smart man named Thucydides had an idea on a day in 426 BCE. He thought a big shake under the sea, like a wiggle on the ocean floor, was what woke me up. And he was right. A big earthquake gives me the push I need to start my long journey across the water.

I know I can be very big and strong, and that can seem scary. But the most wonderful thing is how people have learned my secrets to help each other. Today, smart scientists use special tools to listen for those wiggles under the ocean. If they feel a big shake, they send a message to everyone. The message says, “A Tsunami might be coming. It’s time to move to higher ground.” Knowing about me helps people work together to keep everyone safe.
