Tsunami

I start with a secret rumble, deep, deep down on the ocean floor. It’s not a sound you can hear—it’s a feeling, like the whole world is giving a big, sleepy wiggle. This jiggle pushes the water above, and that’s when I am born. I’m not like the regular waves you see splashing at the beach. I am a long, quiet, super-fast wave that travels across the whole ocean. When I’m in the deep water, ships can sail right over me and not even know I’m there. But I’m just getting started on my long journey, and soon everyone will see my power.

As I get closer to land, where the water is not as deep, I start to slow down and grow taller, and taller, and TALLER. A long time ago, people didn't know what I was. In the country of Japan, fishermen would be out on the ocean and not feel a thing. But when they sailed back to their village, they would find the harbor all washed away. They thought I was a mysterious wave that only appeared in the harbor, so they gave me my name: Tsunami. It means 'harbor wave.' One of the first people to understand me lived in a place called Ancient Greece a very, very long time ago, around 426 BCE. His name was Thucydides, and he noticed that I would only show up after the ground had shaken from an earthquake. He wrote it down, connecting the shaking earth to my powerful waves. In Japan, people even carved warnings on big 'tsunami stones' hundreds of years ago, telling future families to build their homes on high ground to stay safe from me.

Today, people understand me much better. After a big tsunami hit Hawaii on April 1st, 1946, scientists worked together to create a special alarm system in 1949. Now, special buoys and sensors rest on the ocean floor, listening for the earth’s rumbles. When they feel a big shake that could create me, they send out a warning to everyone living near the coast. It’s a message that says, 'A tsunami might be coming! It’s time to move to higher ground!' I am a mighty force of nature, a reminder that our planet is alive and always changing. By understanding me, you learn how to listen to the Earth, how to prepare, and how to help each other stay safe. And that makes you more powerful than any wave.
