The story

I Am an Alebrije

I am a creature of impossible shapes and a symphony of colors. Imagine me: I might have the powerful body of a jaguar, the soaring wings of an eagle, and the branching horns of a deer, all painted in electric blues, fiery oranges, and brilliant sunshine yellows. My skin is a canvas of intricate patterns—tiny dots, swirling lines, and geometric shapes that dance across my form. I exist in a world between waking and sleeping, a place that feels both familiar and wonderfully new. Before you even knew my name, you felt my magic—the wild, joyful energy of a dream brought to vivid life. I am not just one creature; I am a whole family, a vibrant menagerie of beings born from the depths of imagination. We are the Alebrijes.

My story, and the story of all my kind, begins with a man named Pedro Linares López. He was a gifted artist from Mexico City who specialized in a craft called ‘cartonería,’ the art of making things from papier-mâché. He made piñatas and traditional figures for celebrations, his hands skilled at turning simple paper and paste into something magical. But in the year 1936, a serious illness sent him into a deep, feverish sleep. In this state, he dreamed he was walking through a strange and peaceful forest. The world around him was calm, until something astonishing began to happen. The trees, the rocks, and even the clouds started to twist and transform into bizarre, chimerical animals. A donkey with delicate butterfly wings fluttered past him. A rooster with the mighty horns of a bull let out a crow. A lion with the sharp head of an eagle gazed at him with intelligent eyes. These creatures were unlike anything in the waking world, yet they felt peaceful, not frightening. As they swirled around him, they began to chant a single, musical, nonsensical word: 'Alebrijes. Alebrijes. Alebrijes.'. When Pedro finally woke up, the dream was burned into his memory. He felt an overwhelming need to bring these impossible creatures into the real world, to show everyone the wonders he had seen. He immediately went to his workshop and began to build us. He shaped wire into our fantastical skeletons, carefully covered us with layers of newspaper strips and paste, and once we were dry, he painted us with the same vivid colors and complex patterns from his vision.

For a time, we were a secret wonder hidden in Pedro's workshop in the La Merced neighborhood. But creations as unique as we were could not stay hidden for long. Our fame began to grow when two of Mexico’s most celebrated artists, the painter Frida Kahlo and the muralist Diego Rivera, discovered us. They were completely enchanted by our fantastical forms and vibrant energy. They didn't just admire us; they commissioned Pedro to make more, becoming his greatest patrons. They displayed us in their home, showing us to friends, collectors, and other artists. Word of the 'Alebrijes' spread. Our story traveled beyond Mexico City, and by the 1950s and 1960s, our spirit had reached the state of Oaxaca, a region with a long, rich history of woodcarving. Talented artisans there, like the visionary Manuel Jiménez Ramírez, were deeply inspired by our forms. Instead of papier-mâché, they began to carve our cousins from the soft, fragrant wood of the local copal tree. These wooden Alebrijes were just as imaginative, each one carved and painted by hand with incredible patience and skill, their patterns often reflecting Zapotec traditions. Whether made of paper in the capital or wood in the southern villages, we all share the same heart—one born from a dream and crafted by the hands of genius.

Today, we are more than just sculptures; we are a proud symbol of Mexican folk art, a testament to the boundless power of creativity. Our family has grown immensely since 1936. You can see us in our most spectacular form as giant, parading figures during the annual 'La Noche de los Alebrijes' parade in Mexico City, a celebration of art and imagination. We also sit quietly on shelves in homes and stand in glass cases in museums all around the world, from Mexico to Japan to France. We are a reminder that even a frightening and difficult experience, like Pedro Linares's illness, can be the seed for something beautiful and full of life. Our story is proof that your imagination is a powerful gift. Listen to your daydreams, embrace your wildest ideas, and never be afraid to create something the world has never seen before. You, too, can bring a world of impossible, wonderful things to life.
