The story

The Story of Anime

I am a world of impossible colors, where heroes have hair like the rainbow and eyes that hold entire galaxies. I am the flash of a sword, the roar of a giant robot, and the quiet tear of a newfound friend. In my universe, you can find adventures in magical forests, thrilling races through futuristic cities, or gentle stories about everyday life. My stories leap, fly, and zoom with incredible speed and emotion, pulling you into a whirlwind of excitement and feeling. You might not know my name yet, but you have felt my energy and seen my vibrant worlds flash across a screen. I am Anime, the stories that travel from Japan to fill your imagination.

My oldest relatives were beautiful picture scrolls called 'emakimono' that told stories frame by frame centuries ago in Japan. Artists would unroll them to show one picture at a time, like a movie in slow motion. But I truly came to life in the early 20th century, when people learned how to make pictures move much faster. On a day in 1917, artists like Ōten Shimokawa used thousands of drawings, each one slightly different from the last, to make me move for the very first time on film. Can you imagine drawing the same character over and over again just to make them wave hello. I was just a short, silent, black-and-white film back then, a flickering shadow telling a simple joke or a quick story. It was a humble start, but it was the first time my pictures learned to dance.

A wonderful storyteller named Osamu Tezuka, who was like a wizard with a pen, changed everything for me. He saw that my characters could show so much more emotion if they had the right features. He believed my characters needed big, expressive eyes to show every feeling—happiness, sadness, surprise, and courage. He thought the eyes were the windows to the soul. On January 1st, 1963, he introduced the world to a brave robot boy in a show called 'Astro Boy.'. Suddenly, I was on television, visiting families in their homes every week. It was a huge moment for me. Before this, in 1958, the first full-length color movie, 'The Tale of the White Serpent,' showed everyone how beautiful my colors could be on a big screen. But it was Osamu Tezuka's ideas and his weekly television shows that helped me tell longer, more exciting stories that families could enjoy together, making me a friend who visited them regularly.

During the 1980s and 1990s, I grew up and told all kinds of tales. There were stories of magical girls in sparkly outfits defending the world, powerful warriors with spiky hair who could shout to make the ground shake, and gentle spirits living in quiet, sun-dappled forests. Amazing creators like Hayao Miyazaki, who started his famous Studio Ghibli in 1985, painted me with such care and beauty that people all over the world fell in love. My stories were filled with flying castles, friendly forest giants, and brave young heroes. I traveled across the oceans, first on clunky video tapes that people would share with their friends and then on television channels in different languages. I made new friends in every country, and children everywhere began to draw my characters and dream my stories.

Today, I am bigger than ever. I can be a silly comedy that makes you laugh until your sides hurt, a thrilling adventure on a distant planet, or a quiet story that makes you think about the world in a new way. I am proof that a simple drawing can hold a universe of feelings and ideas. From my first flickering images in 1917 to the amazing movies and series you watch now, I have always been about sharing stories. I connect people through shared tales of friendship, hope, and the courage to be yourself. I am a window into dreams, a bridge between cultures, and a reminder that your imagination is the most powerful magic of all. What story will you dream with me next?
