The story

The Chunnel's Tale

Deep beneath the waves, in the quiet dark of the seabed, I hold the big, blue sea above me. I am a long, smooth tube, a secret path hidden from the fish and the boats that float far above. Sometimes, I feel a deep rumble, a whirring sound that zips from one end of me to the other. It's the exciting sound of wheels on tracks. I am the Channel Tunnel, but my friends like to call me the Chunnel. I was built for a very special reason. my job is to connect two amazing countries, Great Britain and France, so people can travel between them without ever touching the water.

For more than two hundred years, people dreamed of me. They imagined a secret passage under the English Channel, a way to walk or ride in a carriage from France to England without getting their feet wet. It was a wonderful, big idea, but it took a long time to make it happen. Finally, in the year 1987, thousands of workers came to make that dream real. They came from both the English side and the French side of the water. Giant digging machines, which looked like enormous metal worms, started munching through the chalky rock deep under the sea. These machines were huge and powerful. Day and night, they worked, digging and pushing forward, inching closer to each other from opposite directions. Everyone was so excited. The most wonderful day was December 1st, 1990. On that day, a French worker and an English worker drilled a tiny hole through the last bit of rock separating them. They reached through and shook hands, right in the middle of me. At that moment, I was finally one long, amazing tunnel.

On May 6th, 1994, I officially opened for everyone. It was a grand celebration. Queen Elizabeth II from Great Britain and President François Mitterrand from France took the first official train ride through me. Can you imagine how exciting that was? Now, super-fast trains called the Eurostar zoom through me every single day. They are sleek and quick, turning what used to be a long boat ride into a short train trip. These trains carry people going on fun adventures, families visiting their loved ones, and even big trucks and cars on special trains made just for them. I am more than just a tunnel under the sea. I am a symbol of friendship between countries, proving that when people work together, they can connect the world in amazing ways. I help everyone remember that we are all neighbors, no matter what side of the water we live on.
