The story

The Santa María's Big Adventure

Whoosh. The big white sails catch the wind. We are three friends floating on the big, blue sea. We are made of strong wood, and we bob, bob, bob on the waves together. Our masts are tall, like trees reaching for the sky. I am the biggest ship. I am the Santa María, and these are my friends, the Pinta and the Niña. We are three sister ships on a great big adventure.

We were built in a sunny land called Spain a very long time ago. A brave explorer named Christopher Columbus had a big dream. He wanted to sail all the way across the giant ocean to find new places. The King and Queen of Spain, Ferdinand and Isabella, helped him get ready for his amazing trip. On a warm, sunny day, August 3rd, 1492, we all waved goodbye. We sailed away from a town called Palos de la Frontera. Our great adventure had begun.

We sailed for many, many days and many, many nights. The sun would shine, and the stars would twinkle. Then one morning, on October 12th, 1492, a sailor shouted, 'Land. I see land.'. We saw a beautiful new world. It had tall green trees and pretty birds that sang new songs. My journey ended in those warm, sunny waters, but that's okay. My brave sisters, the Pinta and the Niña, sailed all the way back home. They told everyone about the amazing new world we found. Our trip helped connect people from all over the world, and it still helps people dream about exploring.
