The story

A Big Book of Promises

I feel like a big, warm hug made of paper and ink. Inside me are special promises for a very big family. The promises are about being fair, kind, and happy together. I am not a person, but I have a very important job for a whole country. I help everyone know the rules so they can play nicely and share. I am a very special book. I am the Constitution of India.

After my country, India, became new and free, a group of very wise and kind people came together to create me. They wanted to write down all the best ideas for everyone to live happily. They started meeting on a chilly day, December 9th, 1946. A very smart leader named Dr. B.R. Ambedkar helped them write everything down just right. He made sure every word was filled with hope. They worked and worked for a long, long time. They wanted to make sure I was perfect. Finally, on November 26th, 1949, they finished writing all the promises inside me. I was ready.

My big day came on January 26th, 1950. That was the day I officially started my job. Now, everyone in India celebrates this special day with a big party. They call it Republic Day. My job is to make sure every child and every grown-up is treated with respect. I promise that everyone gets a chance to follow their dreams, big or small. I am like a guiding star that shines for the whole country. I hold everyone together like a big, warm hug, and I promise to keep everyone safe and fair, today and always.
