The story

The Story of Go

I am a world of black and white. Little lines run all over me like tiny roads. On these roads, smooth, cool stones are placed. Some stones are as dark as the night sky. The other stones are as white as a fluffy cloud. When someone puts a stone down, it makes a gentle 'click' sound. Click. Click. Click. I love that sound. It means someone is thinking. I am a game called Go.

I was born in a land called China a very, very long time ago. It was more than 4,000 years in the past. People wanted a game that was easy to learn, but was always new and fun. So, they made me. Players take turns putting their stones on my lines. First a black stone, then a white stone. They try to make little fences with their stones to make their own special spaces on the board. It is not a game about fighting. It is a game about thinking quietly and being patient.

After I was born in China, I went on big journeys. I traveled to new lands like Japan and Korea. People there loved me too. They gave me new names like 'Igo' and 'Baduk'. For thousands of years, wise teachers played on my board. A very smart man named Confucius even wrote about me around the 5th century BCE. I helped people learn how to think together in a peaceful way.

Today, children and grown-ups all over the world play with my black and white stones. Even smart computers are learning how to play me. I am very, very old, but every single game is a new story. I show people that even with simple rules, you can make something beautiful. And I remind everyone that thinking quietly can be the best adventure of all.
