Just want Gondola?
Imagine gliding without a sound, except for the gentle lap-lap of water against my sides. Colorful buildings lean toward each other like old friends, and their reflections wiggle and dance below me. There are no rumbling cars here, only the music of a faraway singer or the happy chatter of people. I am long and thin, with a pointy nose that curls up like a smile. I sway gently, like a cradle rocking you to sleep. Do you know who I am. I am a gondola, the famous boat of a very special city.
I was born in a magical place called Venice, a city in Italy that is built right on top of the water. My story is very old. People first started writing about my ancestors way back in the year 1094. That's over nine hundred years ago. Special boat builders, called squeraroli, carefully crafted me from many different kinds of wood. They are true artists. They gave me a secret, clever shape. If you look closely, you'll see that I am not perfectly straight. One of my sides is a little longer than the other. This lopsided shape is my superpower. It helps my driver, the gondolier, steer me through narrow, watery streets called canals. With just one long oar, the gondolier can push me forward, turn me around corners, and even make me go backward. It's like a special dance we do together on the water.
Long, long ago, my gondola friends and I were a rainbow on the water. We were painted bright red, sunny yellow, or deep blue. Rich families would decorate us with shiny gold and fancy fabrics to show everyone how important they were. It was like a big, beautiful boat parade every single day. But then, in the year 1562, a new rule changed everything. The leaders of Venice decided that all gondolas should be the same. They said we all had to be painted a sleek, shiny black. This was so that no one boat looked richer or fancier than another. It made us all look elegant and equal. Now, my dark color makes the beautiful city around me stand out even more. Against my black paint, the green water, colorful buildings, and blue sky look like sparkling jewels.

I don't carry people to the market or to their jobs as much as I used to. The city has bigger boats for that now. But I have a new, very important job. I carry wonder and dreams. I show visitors from all over the world the secret corners and quiet canals of Venice. I let them drift through hundreds of years of history. When you take a ride in me, you are floating on a thousand years of stories. You connect with the past and become part of the magic of a city that still dreams on the water.
