The story

The Little Gold Medal's Story

I am a little circle, and I shine like the sun. I am made of gold, so bright and warm. I am a medal. I am round like a happy face and small enough to fit in your hand. I wait and wait for a very special person to hold me. I am given to people who create the most wonderful stories and pictures for children just like you. My name is the Hans Christian Andersen Award. I am a special prize for the best storytellers and artists in the whole wide world.

My story began with a beautiful dream. A very kind woman named Jella Lepman wanted to help children feel happy and safe. She wanted friends everywhere to share stories. So, in the year 1956, she and her friends made me. They wanted me to celebrate books that build bridges from one heart to another. They named me after a famous storyteller, Hans Christian Andersen. He wrote fairy tales you might know, like the story of 'The Little Mermaid'. He loved telling stories, and I help remember his love for stories.

Every two years, I get to go on a big trip to a new home. I am given to an amazing author who writes wonderful words, or a brilliant artist who draws beautiful pictures. When they hold me, they know their stories and art are like magic. This magic helps children everywhere share their dreams and go on adventures in their minds. I am a happy reminder that the world will always be full of wonderful stories to make you smile and wonder.
