The story

The Story of the Ishango Bone

Begin in a warm, sunny place from long, long ago, beside a sparkling lake surrounded by lush green trees. I am small and dark, like a smooth river stone, but I am actually a bone. I fit perfectly in the palm of a hand. A sharp, shiny piece of quartz is attached to my tip, but my real secret is in the tiny, neat scratches carved all along my body in three straight lines. They look like little messages from a time so far away, you can only imagine it. I am the Ishango Bone.

A very clever person made me more than 20,000 years ago. They sat by the water's edge and used my quartz tip to carefully carve each notch. These weren't just doodles. Some people think my creator was counting the days between each full moon, making me one of the world's first calendars. Others believe I am a math tool. The notches are grouped in special ways—some are prime numbers, and some show numbers being doubled. My creator might have been solving problems or keeping track of important things. I was a tool for thinking, made by one of the world's very first mathematicians.

For thousands and thousands of years, I slept under the earth. A nearby volcano had erupted, covering my village in soft ash, and I was lost to the world. I waited patiently in the quiet dark until one day in the 1950s, a man named Jean de Heinzelin de Braucourt was carefully digging in the ground in a place called Ishango. He gently brushed the dirt from my face, and I saw the sun for the first time in ages. I was discovered.

Today, I live in a museum in Belgium where people can see my mysterious markings. I am a tiny bone, but I carry a giant message. I prove that people, long ago in Africa, were brilliant, curious, and loved to solve puzzles just like you do. I am a whisper from the past that says the amazing power of the human mind has been shining bright for a very, very long time. And that same spark of curiosity is inside you, ready to discover something wonderful.
