The Quran: A Voice Made of Words
I am not made of stone or paint, but of something you can hear and feel. I am a whisper that began in a quiet desert cave, a voice carried on the wind for all to hear. My words flow like a river, arranged in a beautiful, poetic way. My language is Arabic, and when my words are spoken aloud, they sing with a special rhythm. I am a message of peace, guidance, and wonder for millions of people around the world. Before anyone held me as a book with pages and a cover, they held me in their hearts, memorizing my every sound and syllable. I am the Quran.
My story begins with a kind and thoughtful man named Muhammad, who lived in the city of Mecca more than 1,400 years ago. Around the year 610 CE, he often went to a mountain cave to think and pray. It was there that he received the first of my words. For the next 23 years, more and more of my verses were revealed to him, first in Mecca and later in a city called Medina. This didn't happen all at once. Imagine getting a very important message, piece by piece, over many years. His friends and followers listened with great attention, and they memorized everything they heard. To make sure not a single word was lost, they wrote my verses down on whatever they could find. Can you imagine writing a story on flat stones, pieces of leather, or the wide, strong leaves of a palm tree? That was my first library, scattered across the desert landscape.
After the Prophet Muhammad passed away on June 8th, 632 CE, his companions knew it was very important to protect my words forever so they would never be changed or lost. One of his closest followers, a wise leader named Uthman ibn Affan, took on a very special task. Around the year 650 CE, he decided to gather all those scattered writings and bring together all the people who knew me by heart. They worked together with incredible care, like puzzle masters putting together the most important puzzle in the world. They checked every verse against what people had memorized, making sure everything was perfect. They wove all my parts into a single, complete book, so my message would stay clear and true for all people, for all time.
For centuries, I have traveled across the globe, carried in hands and held in hearts. I am read by families in their homes, studied by scholars in great libraries, and recited in a way that sounds like beautiful music. My words have inspired an incredible art form called calligraphy, where artists turn my verses into swirling, graceful designs that are as beautiful to the eyes as they are to the soul. I share stories and ideas that teach about kindness, patience, and the importance of helping others. I am a book, but for many, I am also a companion, a source of comfort, and a reminder to look for the good in the world and in each other. I connect people across time and distance with a shared message of peace and understanding.
