The story

I Am Route 66

I am a long, long ribbon. I stretch across a big country. I wiggle over green hills and lay flat across warm, sandy places. I run right through big cities with tall, tall buildings that touch the sky. Cars drive on me all day long. Their tires tickle my back as they roll, roll, roll along. Vroom. Vroom. I go on and on, like a path for a great adventure. I am a special road, full of stories. I am U.S. Route 66.

My journey began a long, long time ago. On November 11th, 1926, wonderful road builders put me all together. They made me strong so everyone could travel safely. I was made to help people drive their cars from one side of the country all the way to the other. Soon, families came driving on me. Their cars were full of their favorite toys and comfy blankets. They were looking for new homes and happy new places to live. I was their road of hope. I helped them on their big, big trip, and I was happy to feel their wheels rolling toward a new adventure. I was a strong and helpful road, and I loved all the families who traveled with me.

Today, there are newer, faster roads. But people still love to visit me. They come to see the fun things along my path. They see bright, colorful signs that blink and glow at night. They see funny little buildings and old-fashioned shops that look like they are from a storybook. People smile and take pictures when they travel on me. I am a road of happy memories and exciting stories. I connect people and places, and I whisper, 'Come on, let's have a new adventure together.'
