Just want The Tale of Genji?
Before I was a book, I was a whisper on a long, unrolling scroll. I am made of delicate paper and the scent of dark ink, painted with tiny, graceful letters. I am not just a story; I am a whole world of rustling silk kimonos, quiet gardens with cherry blossoms, and beautiful poems shared by moonlight. My pages tell the story of a handsome and charming prince, so kind and bright that people called him the 'Shining Prince.' I am The Tale of Genji, and I am the world's very first novel.
A brilliant lady-in-waiting at the emperor's court in Japan brought me to life over a thousand years ago. Her name was Murasaki Shikibu. Around the year 1008, during a peaceful time known as the Heian period, she would sit with her ink stone and a fine brush, imagining my world. She wrote my chapters one by one on long paper scrolls. Why did she do this. She wanted to entertain the empress and the other ladies of the court. They would gather together, excited to hear what happened next to Prince Genji and the people in his life. It was their favorite show, but with words instead of a screen.
My story follows the life of Prince Genji. He is loved by everyone, but his life isn't always easy. He goes on adventures, falls in love, feels sad, and makes mistakes, just like real people do. Through his story, you can see how he learns and grows. My pages are filled with exciting parties, quiet moments watching the seasons change, and deep feelings about friendship and family. I am a special kind of story because I am not just about big battles or magic. I am a story about understanding the feelings in our hearts, which is a very important adventure too.

For centuries, people in Japan have loved my tale. Artists painted my most famous scenes on beautiful folding screens and scrolls, and my story has inspired countless poems, plays, and even movies. Today, people all around the world can read my words. I am a window into a beautiful world from long ago, but the feelings in my story—love, joy, and sadness—are still understood today. I show that even though time passes and clothes and houses change, the things that connect us as people always stay the same, like a story whispered from one heart to another across a thousand years.
