Cinco de Mayo

Hello. My name is General Ignacio Zaragoza, and I want to tell you a story about my home, the beautiful country of Mexico. Mexico is a wonderful place, with warm sunshine, delicious food, and people with big hearts. But one day, a long time ago, a very large and powerful army came to our shores. They came all the way across the big ocean from a country called France. Their uniforms were fancy, and their weapons were shiny. Many of our people were worried because this army was known for being one of the strongest in the world. But even though we were worried, we were not scared. We looked at our homes, our families, and our beautiful land, and we all felt a fire light up inside us. It was a feeling of bravery. We knew we had to stand together and protect the country we loved so much.

That feeling of bravery was most important on one very big day: May 5th, 1862. This was the day we would face the French army in a place called Puebla. I looked at my own army, and I felt so proud. We were not a big army. Many of my soldiers were regular people, not trained fighters, and we did not have fancy uniforms or shiny new equipment. But I knew we had something the other army didn't. We had a giant, powerful love for Mexico in our hearts, and that made us stronger than anything. The battle began, and the sounds of cannons went BOOM, BOOM, BOOM, echoing through the hills. It had been raining, so the ground was all squishy and muddy, which made it hard to move. The French soldiers tried to climb the hills to capture our forts, but my brave soldiers worked together. They were so courageous. They stood side-by-side and fought with all their might to defend our forts and our city. They were not just fighting for themselves; they were fighting for everyone in Mexico.

A Victory to Remember!
Then, after many hours of fighting, the loud noises began to fade. The French army was retreating. They were leaving. We had done it. We had won the Battle of Puebla. I heard a few cheers, and then a few more, until our whole army was shouting with happiness. We hugged each other, filled with joy and pride. Even though we were a smaller army, our big hearts had won the day. This victory was so important. It sent a message to the whole world that the people of Mexico were strong, brave, and would always stand up for their freedom. And that is why, every year on the 5th of May, or Cinco de Mayo, people celebrate. They remember the courage of those soldiers at the Battle of Puebla and celebrate the amazing culture and spirit of Mexico. It is a day to be proud of who you are and to remember that even when things seem hard, bravery and love can make you strong.
