Just want La Tomatina?
Hello. My name is Mateo, and I live in a sunny little town in Spain called Buñol. One day, long ago, everyone in my town was having a big party. There was a parade with music and giant, funny-looking puppets with big heads. It was so exciting. We were all clapping and laughing. Suddenly, a big cart full of vegetables tipped over right in the middle of the square. Oh, what a mess. Red, squishy tomatoes rolled everywhere. They bounced on the ground and made little splats. Everyone stopped to see what happened. The whole street was covered in yummy, red tomatoes. It was a very silly surprise for our parade.
I looked at all the tomatoes on the ground. They looked so squishy and fun. I picked one up. It felt soft in my hand. Then, I had a silly idea. I saw my friend, Sofia, and I tossed the tomato very gently. SPLAT. It landed right on her shirt and made a funny red spot. Sofia giggled. Then she picked up a tomato and tossed it back at me. SPLAT. Soon, all the other kids started picking up tomatoes. We all started tossing them. Splat. Splish. Sploosh. We were laughing so hard. The whole town square became a happy, messy sea of red tomato bits and giggling friends. It was the best game ever.
That first tomato toss was the most fun we had ever had. We talked about it for days. It was so much fun that we all decided to do it again the next year. And the year after that. Now, every year on the last Wednesday of August, my town of Buñol has the world's biggest, happiest food fight. People come from all over to laugh and play in the tomatoes. Our silly, messy day turned into a famous party that celebrates being happy and playing with friends.
