Su Shi and the World of Amazing Ideas
Hello. My name is Su Shi. I lived a long, long time ago in a place called China. It was a wonderful time called the Song Dynasty. I was a painter, and I loved to use my big, soft brush to paint pictures. Swish, swoosh. I would dip my brush in black ink and paint tall, graceful bamboo stalks on paper. I also loved to write happy poems about the sunshine, the rivers, and my friends. My home was filled with art and new ideas. Everyone was busy creating beautiful things and thinking of clever new ways to do things. It was a very exciting time to be alive.
Every day, there was something new to see. It was like magic. My good friend, Bi Sheng, had a super clever idea around the year 1045. He made little blocks, like tiny stamps, with words on them. He could move them all around to make new sentences and pages. This meant he could print books so much faster. More books meant more stories for everyone to read and share. At night, the sky would burst into colors. Boom. Pop. Sparkle. We had discovered something called gunpowder, and we used it to make amazing fireworks that danced in the dark. We also had a magic spoon. It was a special compass. No matter which way you turned it, the spoon would always point south. It helped people find their way home if they ever got lost. Our world was full of wonderful inventions.
I grew old and am not here anymore, but the wonderful things from my time are still with you today. When you read a story from a book, you can think of my friend Bi Sheng and his clever blocks. When you see beautiful art, you can think of me and my inky bamboo paintings. The Song Dynasty was a time for sharing our best ideas. We learned that when we create something new and share it with others, it makes the world a happier and more beautiful place for everyone, for a very, very long time. Our ideas became gifts for the whole world.
