Hello, I am the Boi-Bumbá Festival, and I am one of the biggest and most colorful celebrations in all of Brazil. My story isn't just one story, but many, all woven together with music, dance, and incredible art. At the very center of my celebration is a famous Brazilian folktale about a very special, magical ox. It's a tale of love, loss, and miracles that comes to life every year in the heart of the Amazon.
The story that people tell begins with a farmhand named Pai Francisco and his wife, Mãe Catirina, who was expecting a baby. One day, Mãe Catirina had a strange craving: she desperately wanted to eat the tongue of her husband’s master’s favorite ox. Pai Francisco loved his wife so much that he did what she asked, even though he knew it would cause terrible trouble. When the ranch owner discovered his prized ox was dead, he was furious and threatened Pai Francisco. To save himself, Pai Francisco had to find a way to fix his mistake. In the story, a powerful shaman is called upon. Using special chants and rituals, the shaman performs a miracle and brings the beloved ox back to life. The whole town rejoices, and this act of resurrection is the heart of the story people celebrate with me.
My celebration unfolds each year in a truly special place: the city of Parintins. This city is located on an island right in the middle of the mighty Amazon River in Brazil. For three amazing nights during the last weekend of June, the island comes alive with my festivities. The energy is incredible as performers prepare and crowds gather. It's such a unique event that thousands of people make the journey from all across Brazil and even from different countries around the world. They travel by boat and plane to be part of the excitement and to witness the performances.

What makes me so exciting is a friendly but very serious competition. My entire celebration is built around the rivalry between two teams, which are called 'bois'. Each 'boi' represents a different group. The first is Boi Garantido. Their signature color is red, and their powerful symbol is a heart. The second team is Boi Caprichoso. Their color is a deep blue, and their symbol is a shining star. This isn't just a small rivalry; it divides the entire city of Parintins. Half of the residents are passionate supporters of Garantido, while the other half are completely dedicated to Caprichoso. You can see the colors red and blue all over the city, showing which side people are on.
This grand competition needs a grand stage, and it has one built especially for me. The performances take place in a huge arena called the Bumbódromo. This stadium is enormous and can hold 35,000 cheering fans. Its design is one of a kind. The whole building is shaped like the head of a giant ox. To perfectly capture the spirit of the rivalry, the arena is split right down the middle. One side is for the red supporters of Garantido, and the other side is for the blue supporters of Caprichoso. This design makes the competition feel even more epic and central to everything that happens.
Inside the Bumbódromo, the two teams put on a show that is almost impossible to describe. Each team gets exactly two and a half hours each night to present its performance. Their goal is to tell their own version of the ox folktale, as well as other legends and stories from the Amazon rainforest. To do this, they use some of the most amazing stagecraft you can imagine. They build enormous, moving puppets called 'alegorias,' which can be several stories tall. Thousands of dancers fill the arena floor, wearing vibrant, detailed costumes that shimmer under the lights. The air is filled with powerful, rhythmic music played by a huge band. The whole performance is like a giant outdoor opera, mixing theater, dance, music, and incredible art to tell the stories of the local culture and folklore.
Today, my importance goes far beyond the competition. I have been officially recognized as a vital part of Brazil's cultural heritage. I am a living, breathing celebration that honors the rich folklore, the ancient indigenous traditions, and the stunning natural beauty of the Amazon region. Through the songs, dances, and magnificent 'alegorias,' people keep these important stories and customs alive. My celebration ensures that these traditions are not forgotten, but are instead passed down for new generations to enjoy, learn from, and be inspired by.
