The story

The Brussels Flower Carpet

Hello! I am the Brussels Flower Carpet. I am not like a carpet you have in your house. I am a giant, soft carpet made from hundreds of thousands of real, colorful flowers. People come to see me in a very big and beautiful city square. This special place is called the Grand-Place, and it is in a city named Brussels in the country of Belgium.

I do not stay for a long time. People can see me for just a few days during the warm summer. I visit only once every two years, which makes my appearance a special event. Many helpers work together to create me. It is like making a giant puzzle with flower petals. First, a huge drawing is placed on the stone floor of the square. This drawing is my pattern, showing where all the colors should go. It is like a big map for the flowers.

Then, hundreds of volunteers carefully begin to place the flowers. They use special flowers called begonias because they have bright, beautiful colors and last a long time without water. The helpers work very, very fast. In just a few hours, they fill in the whole drawing, and I come to life as a giant picture made of flowers. Every time I appear, I have a brand new design. My picture might be inspired by far-away countries, fun shapes, or interesting ideas. People gather all around the square to look at me. They also look down from the windows and balconies of the tall buildings around the square. From high up, they can see my whole beautiful, colorful picture spread out below.
