The story

The Brussels Flower Carpet

Hello! I am the Brussels Flower Carpet. For just a few days every two years, in the middle of August, I transform the historic Grand-Place square in Brussels, Belgium, into a vibrant, living work of art. My story begins with a man named Etienne Stautemas. He was a landscape architect, which means he was an expert in designing beautiful outdoor spaces using plants, trees, and flowers. He had a special talent for creating intricate carpets made entirely of blossoms. After developing his craft and creating smaller flower carpets in other Belgian towns, he decided to bring his biggest idea yet to the nation's capital. In 1971, he designed and created the very first version of me in the center of Brussels, starting a tradition that continues to this day.

My entire existence depends on one very special flower: the begonia. To create my vast and colorful patterns, designers use hundreds of thousands of them. There are several important reasons why begonias are the perfect choice for this job. First, they are incredibly sturdy and can handle different kinds of weather, which is important for an outdoor display. Second, they grow in a huge variety of bright, vivid colors, giving artists a rich palette to work with, almost like paint. Most importantly, begonias have a remarkable ability to last for several days without being planted in soil or given water. This quality ensures that I look fresh and beautiful for everyone who comes to see me. Belgium is also one of the world's largest producers of begonias, so there is always a plentiful local supply of these essential flowers for my creation.

Bringing me to life is a massive project that requires incredible teamwork and happens with amazing speed. The process starts long before any flowers arrive at the square. First, artists and designers work together to create a theme and a detailed design on a small scale. This drawing is the master plan for the entire carpet. Once the design is finalized, a huge, see-through sheet with markings is laid over the cobblestones of the Grand-Place. The artists then transfer the small design onto this large sheet, creating a giant outline. This life-sized guide shows exactly where each color needs to go. In the days leading up to my grand unveiling, a team of about 100 dedicated volunteers gathers. Working together, they carefully place each individual flower into the design by hand. They pack the blossoms so tightly together—about 300 per square meter—that they create a dense, rich carpet of color that won’t be blown away by the wind. It is an intense process, but the team works so efficiently that they can complete the entire enormous image in less than eight hours.

One of the most exciting things about me is that I am never the same. I am a temporary artwork, and each time I appear, I have a completely new look. My design is always inspired by a unique theme, which changes every two years. These themes can be very different. Sometimes, my design honors a specific country, using its national colors, symbols, or famous landmarks as inspiration. Other times, the theme might celebrate an entire continent, reflecting its culture, art, or natural beauty. I have also been created to remember important moments in history, with my floral patterns telling a story from the past. This tradition of changing my theme means that every time people visit me, they are guaranteed to see a brand new, one-of-a-kind artistic creation. It keeps my appearance fresh, surprising, and meaningful.

Today, I am an event that draws visitors from all over the world to Brussels. People gather in the Grand-Place to witness my beauty. There are two main ways to experience me. Many people enjoy viewing me from ground level, which is free for everyone. From this perspective, they can see the incredible detail of the individual blossoms and appreciate the texture of the carpet up close. For a different view, people can get a ticket to go up to the balcony of the City Hall, which overlooks the square. From that high vantage point, the full scope and pattern of my design is revealed, and the millions of flowers come together to form a single, breathtaking picture. My arrival is celebrated in a grand style. On the opening night, a special concert takes place in the square, and a spectacular light show illuminates me as darkness falls. The lights make my colors glow, creating a magical atmosphere and offering a whole new way to see my design.
