The story

Children's Day - Brazilian

Hello! I am Children’s Day in Brazil. My name in Portuguese is Dia das Crianças. People in Brazil look forward to celebrating me every year on a special date: October 12th. I am a day for families to show their children how much they are cherished and loved. On my day, the focus is all on kids, with fun activities, special treats, and lots of attention from their families. My main purpose is to honor children and make them feel happy and important.

My story begins a long time ago, back in the year 1924. A politician in Brazil named Galdino do Valle Filho thought it would be a wonderful idea to have a national day just for children. He shared his idea, and the president at the time, whose name was Arthur Bernardes, agreed. President Bernardes made a law that officially created me. However, even though I was an official day, for many years I was very quiet. Not many people knew about me, and families didn't have special traditions for my celebration. I was just a date on the calendar that most people didn't notice.

Everything changed for me in the 1950s. A company that made toys came up with a very clever idea. They started a big campaign called “Semana da Criança,” which means “Children’s Week.” The company encouraged parents and other family members to buy toys for children as a way to celebrate me. This idea was a huge success! People loved the idea of giving presents to make children happy. Soon, many other toy companies joined in, and the tradition of giving gifts on my day grew and grew. This campaign is what made me the popular and exciting holiday that I am today.

My date, October 12th, is special for another very important reason. This date is also a national public holiday in Brazil to honor Our Lady of Aparecida, who is the country's patron saint. Because this is a major holiday, almost everyone gets the day off from work and school. This is wonderful because it means that families have the entire day free to spend together. They don't have to rush off to their jobs or classes. This shared holiday gives everyone the perfect opportunity to plan a full day of fun and celebration focused on the children in the family.

Today, I am a day that children all across Brazil get very excited about. The tradition of gift-giving is still a huge part of the celebration, and many children wake up eager to see what presents they might receive. But I am about more than just toys. Families celebrate me by creating special memories together. They might spend the day at a park, having a picnic and playing games. Some families go to the movies to see a new film, while others attend special events and parties organized just for kids. I am a joyful time filled with fun, laughter, and family togetherness.
