The story

A Visit to the German Christmas Market

Hello! I am the German Christmas Market, and my story began a very long time ago. My earliest observances were in Germany during a historical period known as the Late Middle Ages. One of the first records that mentions me is from the city of Dresden, all the way back in the year 1434. In those early days, I wasn't just for fun. I was an important place where people came to buy food and other supplies they would need to get through the long, cold winter. It was also a chance for them to get everything they needed for the Christmas holiday.

When people visit me during the Christmas season, they find that I transform town squares into festive wonderlands. I am an outdoor market, made up of many small wooden huts all lined up in neat rows. To make everything feel special, these huts are decorated with countless twinkling lights that sparkle in the evening. People also use green branches from evergreen trees to add to the holiday look. Families and friends enjoy strolling through my decorated lanes, looking at all the wonderful sights and enjoying the cheerful atmosphere.

As visitors walk around, many wonderful smells fill the air. The sweet and spicy scent of gingerbread cookies, which are called Lebkuchen in Germany, is a favorite for many. People can also smell the warm aroma of roasting nuts and spicy cinnamon. The stalls sell all kinds of tasty treats to eat while walking around. For a warm drink, children can enjoy a special non-alcoholic beverage called Kinderpunsch, which is a delicious, warm fruit punch perfect for a chilly day.

My stalls are also filled with beautiful things to see and buy. Many of the items are handmade crafts, created with great care. People can find classic wooden nutcrackers, which are often shaped like soldiers or kings. There are also delicate, shining glass ornaments to hang on Christmas trees and cozy hand-knitted winter hats to keep warm. While shoppers look at all the crafts, they can often hear the lovely sound of Christmas carols. Choirs gather to sing traditional songs, adding beautiful music to the festive air.

Today, I am a cherished tradition for many people. I open during Advent, which is the four-week period before Christmas. Families and friends in Germany and now all around the world come to visit me. They come to share in the holiday spirit, enjoy the special food, and find unique gifts. I have become a special way for people to gather and celebrate the season together, continuing a tradition that is hundreds of years old.
