The story

I Am Eid al-Fitr

Hello! I am a special holiday called Eid al-Fitr. My name has a wonderful meaning. In the Arabic language, it means 'Festival of Breaking the Fast.' I am a joyful time for Muslims all around the world because I mark the end of a special month called Ramadan. During Ramadan, many adult Muslims fast, which means they do not eat or drink from sunrise to sunset. My arrival signals that this time of fasting is over, and it is time to celebrate.

My history began a very long time ago, in the city of Medina, in the year 624. The Prophet Muhammad taught that I should be a time for people to be thankful and to gather with their friends and neighbors. This idea of coming together as a community is still a very important part of how people observe me today.

People get ready for my arrival with great excitement. Families clean their homes until they sparkle. Many people buy beautiful new clothes to wear for the celebration. It is also an important time for kindness and sharing. Before I begin, Muslims give a special charity called Zakat al-Fitr. This gift of food or money helps people in need so that they can also enjoy a festive meal and celebrate with everyone else.

When my first morning arrives, it is full of happy sounds and activities. Many people go to a mosque or a large open space for special prayers to begin the day. They greet one another with the cheerful words, 'Eid Mubarak!' which means 'Blessed Eid!' For the rest of the day, families visit each other’s homes. They share delicious meals and desserts together. My celebration can last for up to three days. During this time, children often receive gifts of money or other presents called 'Eidi,' which makes this a very exciting time for them.
