The Day Brazil Became a Nation: My Story

Hello! I am Brazilian Independence Day. You might also hear people call me "Sete de Setembro," which means the Seventh of September in the Portuguese language. That's because people in Brazil observe me every year on September 7th. I am a very special national holiday because I mark the day that Brazil became its own independent country. Before this important day, Brazil was ruled by a country across the ocean called Portugal. My date is a time for people to remember and celebrate Brazil's freedom to make its own choices and have its own leaders. It is a day filled with great national pride.

My story began a long time ago, in the early 1800s. For many years, Brazil was considered a colony of Portugal. This meant that the people living in Brazil had to follow rules made by the government in Portugal. As time went on, many Brazilians started to feel that their huge, beautiful country should be able to govern itself. They believed it was time for Brazil to become its own nation, separate from Portugal. During this time, the son of the Portuguese king was living in Brazil. His name was Prince Dom Pedro. He could see and hear how much the people around him wanted independence for their country.

The most famous moment in my history happened on September 7th, 1822. This is the date that everyone remembers. Prince Dom Pedro was near the Ipiranga River when he made a decision that changed everything. He received news from Portugal that worried him and the Brazilian people. He knew he had to act. It was there, by the riverbank, that he famously shouted the words, "Independência ou Morte!" In English, this powerful phrase means "Independence or Death!" This was a very brave declaration. It meant that Brazil would fight for its freedom. This historic shout became known as the "Cry of Ipiranga," and it is remembered as the moment Brazil’s independence was declared to the world.

Today, people all over Brazil celebrate me with lots of joy and patriotic spirit. My day, September 7th, is a public holiday, so most people have the day off from work and school to participate in the festivities. In cities and towns, big parades march down the main streets. You can see soldiers in their formal uniforms and students from local schools marching along to the sound of music from marching bands. The streets are filled with color, especially the colors of the Brazilian flag. People proudly wave small flags, and you can see large green, yellow, and blue flags hanging from windows and buildings. It is a beautiful sight that shows deep love for the country. Many people also come together to sing the Brazilian national anthem, a special song that honors the nation's history and people. Celebrating me is a way for Brazilians to connect with their country's past and look toward its future.
