Hello! I am Indigenous Peoples’ Day. I am a special day to honor and celebrate the first people who lived on this land. These people are called Native Americans or Indigenous peoples. They were here a very long time ago, before anyone else.
Indigenous peoples have many unique and wonderful cultures. They have their own special histories, songs, and ways of life. All of these things are a very important part of America’s story. My day is a time to remember and be happy about these amazing cultures.
People observe me in many joyful ways. Families and communities gather together for special events. At these gatherings, people might share traditional stories that have been passed down for a long, long time. Others listen to the strong beat of drumming. Sometimes, people watch dancers in beautiful clothing. This special clothing is called regalia, and it can be very colorful.
I am also a day for learning. It is a time for everyone to learn about the history of Indigenous peoples. People learn about the important things they have shared with the world. Celebrating me helps keep these rich cultures and their wonderful stories strong. It is a way to make sure these important traditions are remembered and shared for many years to come.
