Just want King's Day - Dutch?
Hello! I am King's Day, a very special holiday celebrated all across the country of the Netherlands. People look forward to me every year because I am a big, national party. The whole reason for my celebration is to honor the birthday of the country's monarch, which is another name for a king or queen.
My story started a long time ago, in the year 1885. Back then, I wasn't called King's Day. My very first name was Princess's Day! I was created to celebrate the birthday of a young princess named Wilhelmina. When she grew up and became the queen, my name changed to Queen's Day. For many, many years, people in the Netherlands knew me by that name. My date has also changed over time. That’s because my celebration always happens on the birthday of the ruling king or queen.
After Queen Wilhelmina, other queens like Juliana and Beatrix ruled the country, and my celebration continued. But when Queen Beatrix's son, Willem-Alexander, became the king, my name changed one more time. Now, I am known as King's Day, and people celebrate me on his birthday, which is April 27th.
One of the most wonderful things about my day is how the whole country turns a bright, cheerful color: orange! People wear orange clothes, funny orange hats, and even silly orange wigs. This is because the Dutch royal family is called the House of Orange-Nassau. Orange is their special family color, so wearing it is a fun way for everyone to join in the celebration for the king.
I am also famous for my 'vrijmarkten,' which means 'free markets.' On my day, anyone can lay a blanket on the sidewalk and sell things they no longer use. It’s especially exciting for children, who can set up their own little shops to sell their old toys and games. The streets fill with music, and in cities with canals, you can see festive boat parades floating on the water.

Of course, a good party needs a special treat. There is a delicious pastry called a 'tompouce' that bakeries decorate with bright orange icing just for me. Today, when people celebrate me on April 27th, they enjoy a day full of orange outfits, busy markets, happy music, and sweet pastries. I am a day for the whole country to come together and have a wonderful time.
