The story

Kupala Night: A Ukrainian Summer Festival

Hello! I am Kupala Night, a very old and joyful festival from Ukraine. People celebrate me during the summer, on the shortest night of the year, when there is more daylight than on any other day. My celebration is a happy time that honors the sun, the warmth of the season, and all the good things that summer brings to the world. It is a time to notice the beauty of nature when everything is green and full of life, and the days are long and bright.

Two of my most important traditions involve fire and water, two powerful parts of nature. People believe that on my special night, the water in rivers and lakes has special cleaning powers. Some people go for a swim, believing the water will wash away bad luck and make them healthy. As the sun sets, people also light big bonfires that crackle and glow in the twilight. It is a custom for young couples to hold hands tightly and jump over the flames together. They do this as a test of their bond and to bring good luck in the year ahead.

Flowers are also a very big part of how people celebrate me. In the fields and meadows, girls and young women gather colorful wildflowers and sweet-smelling herbs. They carefully weave them together to create beautiful wreaths. These wreaths are called 'vinoks' in Ukrainian. They wear these lovely floral crowns on their heads during the festival, adding to the beauty of the celebration. Later, they might go to a nearby river or stream to see what their future will be like. They gently place their vinoks on the water and watch them float away, which is part of a traditional game of fortune-telling.

There is a special and magical legend that is told about me. The story says that deep in the forest, for just one brief moment on my night, a magical fern flower blooms. This is not a real flower that you can find on other days; its appearance is said to be a rare and wondrous event that happens only during my celebration. According to the legend, anyone who is brave enough to go into the woods and lucky enough to find this glowing flower will be given amazing gifts. The story goes that the person who finds it will receive great wisdom and a lifetime of happiness.

Today, I am still a beloved festival. People in Ukraine and in Ukrainian communities around the world continue to celebrate me with great excitement. The celebrations are filled with traditional music, energetic dancing, and singing that lasts late into the night. Many of my old traditions, like lighting bonfires and making vinoks, are still an important part of the fun. I am a time for friends, families, and communities to come together, enjoy the magic of a short summer night, and remember ancient customs that have been passed down for a very, very long time.
