Just want La Chandeleur - French?
Hello! I am La Chandeleur, a special day that people in France celebrate. You can find me on the calendar every year on February 2nd. My name, Chandeleur, sounds a lot like the French word for a candle, which is ‘chandelle.’ This is because a long, long time ago, one of my traditions was for people to light lots of candles. The bright, warm light from the candles made the day feel special and cozy.
Today, my most famous tradition is a very tasty one. It is all about making and eating delicious crêpes! A crêpe is like a pancake, but it is very, very thin. Families gather in the kitchen to mix the batter and cook them in a pan. People love to eat them because they are round and golden, just like the sun. This special shape reminds everyone that winter will be over soon. It is a happy sign that warmer spring weather and sunny days are coming.
While making the crêpes, families also play a fun game for good luck. Someone takes the pan with a crêpe in it. In their other hand, they hold a shiny coin. Then, they try to flip the crêpe high into the air and catch it back in the pan! It can be a little tricky, but it is a lot of fun to try. People believe that if you can flip the crêpe just right while holding the coin, it will bring you good luck and good things for the rest of the year.
So, when people in France celebrate me, it is a day filled with warmth and tasty treats. They enjoy sweet crêpes that look like little suns and play a silly game for good luck. It is a happy way for everyone to look forward to the brighter days of spring.
