Just want Labor Day - American?
Hello! I am Labor Day, a special day in the United States. My whole purpose is to honor and celebrate workers. I am a time to say thank you for all the important jobs people do. Workers build our houses and schools, grow the food we eat, teach children new things, and take care of people when they are sick. All of this work is very important, so on my day, many people get a chance to rest from their jobs and relax.
My story began a long time ago. My very first celebration took place in New York City in the year 1882. On that day, thousands of workers came together. They marched through the streets in a big parade. They carried signs and banners to show everyone that they were proud of their jobs. It was their way of showing the world all the wonderful things they helped build and create for their communities.
After that first parade, the idea of having a special day for workers grew more popular. A few years later, I became an official national holiday for the entire country. In 1894, the President of the United States, whose name was Grover Cleveland, signed a very important paper. It was a law that said the first Monday of every September would be my special day. From then on, I would always be a time to honor America's workers.
Today, people observe me in many fun ways. Because I happen in early September, many people think of me as the unofficial last day of summer. It’s a wonderful time for families and friends to gather together one last time before the weather gets cooler. People have picnics in parks or barbecues in their backyards. Some towns and cities still hold parades with music and colorful floats. These parades remember my very first celebration and continue to honor workers everywhere.
