The story

I Am Las Fallas

Hello! I am Las Fallas, a festival of art and fire that takes place in the city of Valencia, Spain. My name means 'the fires' in the local language. I am a celebration that marks the arrival of spring. My story began a very long time ago with a simple tradition started by carpenters. These skilled workers spent the long winter months inside their workshops. When spring approached, bringing longer and warmer days, it was time for a big cleaning. They would gather all the leftover scraps of wood and old items they no longer needed. To celebrate the end of winter, they would burn everything in large bonfires in the streets and squares.

From those simple bonfires, my traditions grew into something much bigger and more artistic. Today, I am famous for my enormous and amazing sculptures, which are also called 'fallas.' All year long, people in different neighborhoods work together to design and build their own falla. These sculptures can be as tall as a building! Each giant falla is made up of many smaller, detailed figures called 'ninots.' The ninots and fallas are very colorful and creative. They are often funny, showing characters and scenes that tell stories about the world or poke fun at things happening in the news.

When my main celebration arrives in March, the streets of Valencia fill with energy and excitement. There are parades with marching bands playing music, and people wear beautiful, traditional clothing with bright patterns and lace. One of my most exciting parts is something you can feel as much as hear. Every single day at 2 p.m., a powerful firecracker event called the 'Mascletà' takes place. The sound is so loud that the ground shakes! It’s a rhythmic explosion of sound and smoke that fills the air. People also take part in a beautiful flower offering, bringing bouquets to create a giant, colorful cape for a huge statue of Mary.

Everything leads up to my grand finale on the night of March 19th. This is the night of 'La Cremà,' which means 'the burning.' It is a spectacular and emotional moment for everyone. One by one, all of the giant fallas that filled the city squares are set on fire. The huge sculptures burn brightly, turning into towering bonfires that light up the night sky across Valencia. As the flames dance, people watch the art they spent a whole year creating disappear into smoke and ash. This big fire is a powerful way of saying a final goodbye to winter and welcoming the new season of spring.

But even though I am a festival of fire, not everything is turned to ash. Each year, one special ninot is saved from the flames. Before La Cremà, all the ninots are put on display, and people get to vote for their absolute favorite one. The winner is called the 'Ninot Indultat,' or the 'pardoned ninot.' This lucky figure is carefully taken away before the fires are lit. Instead of being burned, it is given a permanent home in the Fallas Museum. There, it joins all the other saved ninots from past years, remembered forever as the best of its year.
