Hello! I am Martin Luther King Jr. Day. I am a special day in the United States that honors the life and words of a very important leader. His name was Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and he spent his life working to make sure everyone in the country was treated fairly and with respect. He believed in peaceful ways to make big changes and bring people together.
People observe me every year on the third Monday of January. This date was chosen because it is always close to Dr. King's real birthday, which is on January 15th. Having my observance on a Monday means that people have a long weekend to remember his work and participate in events.
My story began after Dr. King died. Many people felt it was very important to have a special day to remember his work for civil rights, which are the rights that every person should have. These people worked for many years, asking the government to create a holiday in his honor. Their hard work was successful, and in 1983, the United States government made me an official national holiday for the whole country.
On my day, many schools and workplaces are closed. This gives people time to observe me in different ways. Some people join in marches or parades to show they support Dr. King’s ideas. Others listen to recordings of his famous speeches, which are still powerful today. Many people also spend the day helping others in their communities by volunteering. They see it as a “day on, not a day off,” which means it is a day for doing good things for others.

Today, I am a day for people to think about Dr. King's dream of peace and equality for all people. I remind everyone of his important message that people should be judged by their character, which means who they are on the inside, and not by the color of their skin. My purpose is to help people remember his work and to keep his dream alive.
