Just want Onam - Indian?
Hello! I am Onam. I am a happy festival from a part of India called Kerala. People there look forward to my arrival every year. I am a time to remember a very kind king from long ago. His name was Mahabali.
The story people tell says that King Mahabali loved his people very much. To honor him, his spirit is welcomed back to visit them once every year. My celebration is that special time for his visit. It is a time filled with joy and beautiful things.
To get ready for the king's spirit, people make wonderful decorations with me. They gather all kinds of colorful flower petals. Then, they arrange the petals on the ground to make big, beautiful circles. These pretty flower carpets are called Pookkalam, and they are a special way to say, “welcome!”
My celebration also includes a very special meal that families share. This big feast is called the Onam Sadya. There are many different kinds of delicious food to try. Instead of a plate, the food is served on a large, green banana leaf. Everyone sits together to enjoy all the wonderful tastes.
So, when you see colorful Pookkalam on the ground and families eating a big meal from banana leaves, you know I am here. I am a happy time for remembering a kind king, making beautiful things, and sharing food with loved ones.
