Hello! I am Pongal, a four-day harvest festival. My name means “to boil over” or “overflow,” which is a sign of a good harvest. People celebrate me mostly in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu, but also in many other places around the world where Tamil people live. I am a special time for everyone to give thanks for the wonderful food that has been grown in the fields. During my four days, people also give thanks for the sun that helped the crops grow strong and tall, and for the farm animals that helped with the work. I am a festival filled with gratitude and joy for nature’s gifts.
My celebration begins on a day called Bhogi Pongal. This first day is all about new beginnings and making a fresh start. To prepare, people spend time cleaning their homes from top to bottom, making sure everything is tidy and ready for the new year. They also gather old belongings that they don’t need anymore. Many families light a bonfire outside their homes. Into this fire, they place the old items they have collected. Watching the old things burn is a symbol of letting go of the past. It shows they are ready to welcome a new and happy start.
My second day is the most important one, and it is called Surya Pongal. On this day, people show their thanks to the Sun God, Surya. It is the sun’s warmth and light that helps the rice and other crops grow in the fields. Families gather outdoors, often in their yards or on their porches, to cook a special dish. This sweet rice dish is also called pongal. It is made with newly harvested rice, milk, and a type of sugar called jaggery. Everyone cooks it in a brand new clay pot, and they watch it carefully. When the pongal dish boils and overflows from the pot, people cheer! This is seen as a sign of good luck, meaning there will be plenty of food and happiness for the whole year.

My third day is known as Mattu Pongal. This is a day to honor and celebrate the cattle that are so important to farmers. All year long, cows and bulls help plow the fields and provide milk for families. On Mattu Pongal, farmers give their animal friends a day to rest and be treated like royalty. The animals are given a nice bath to get them clean. Then, their horns are painted in bright, cheerful colors. They are decorated with beautiful flower garlands and tinkling bells. The cattle are also fed special treats, like sweet pongal and fruits, as a big thank you for all their hard work.
My celebration comes to a happy end on the fourth and final day, which is called Kaanum Pongal. This day is a time for families and communities to come together and share their joy. People put on their best clothes and go to visit their relatives and friends. They share delicious meals, exchange gifts, and spend the day talking and laughing with each other. It is a wonderful day of connection that strengthens the bonds between loved ones. Kaanum Pongal is a perfect, happy ending to my four days of giving thanks.
