The story

A New Year's Welcome: I Am Réveillon

Hello! I am Réveillon, the special celebration for New Year’s Eve in Brazil. I happen on the very last night of the year, just before a new one begins. On this special night, families and friends gather together. They get ready to say goodbye to the old year. Everyone is full of hope and happiness for the brand new year that is about to start. It is a time for smiles and looking forward to good things.

To get ready for my celebration, many people choose to wear special clothes. They dress in all white from their heads to their toes. The color white is very important. It is a symbol of peace. People hope for a peaceful and happy year ahead. If you go to a beach in Brazil during my celebration, you will see something amazing. Big crowds of people, all dressed in their clean, white clothes, stand together on the sand, waiting for the clock to strike midnight.

Many of my biggest parties happen right by the beautiful ocean. When the new year finally arrives at midnight, the night sky lights up with a wonderful show. Bright, colorful fireworks burst and sparkle high above the water. People cheer as they watch the amazing colors. Many people also bring gifts for the sea. They gently toss white flowers into the ocean waves. These flowers are a gift for Iemanjá, who is known as the Queen of the Sea. It is a beautiful way to welcome the new year.
