The story

Saint Nicholas Day in Belgium

Hello! I am Saint Nicholas Day as celebrated in Belgium. People observe me each year on the fixed date of December 6th. My purpose is to honor the memory of a famously kind man named Saint Nicholas. For many families, especially for children, I am a very special time. My arrival signals a period filled with excitement, delicious traditional treats, and the simple but profound joy of giving and receiving gifts.

My story begins with a real person who lived long before my traditions took shape. The historical Saint Nicholas of Myra was a bishop in the 4th century, living in a region that is now part of Turkey. He became famous for his incredible kindness and his many secret acts of generosity. Legends tell of how he would leave gifts for people in need, helping them without wanting any credit for his actions. Over hundreds of years, these stories of his good deeds traveled across Europe. People were so inspired by his example of selflessness that they began to honor him with a special day of remembrance. Eventually, that day of honor evolved into the holiday that I am today.

My festivities in Belgium don't just happen on a single day; they unfold over several weeks. The season of my celebration truly begins in mid-November. This is when the figure of Saint Nicholas, who is also called Sinterklaas in this region, is said to make his grand entrance into the country. According to tradition, he arrives by steamboat all the way from Spain. To make his arrival special for everyone, the steamboat docks in a different Belgian city each year. Large crowds of children and adults gather at the port to welcome him and his companions, marking the official start of my festive period with parades and cheerful greetings.

The night before my main day, December 5th, is perhaps the most exciting part of my observance. A quiet feeling of anticipation settles over homes across the country. Before going to sleep, children carefully place their empty shoes by the fireplace, near a doorway, or on a windowsill. It is a widespread custom for them to also leave a small gift for Saint Nicholas's horse. This might be a carrot, a lump of sugar, or a small bowl of water. This small act of kindness is done in the hope that Saint Nicholas will visit their home during the night, rewarding their good behavior throughout the year by leaving them gifts.

Saint Nicholas doesn't make his journey alone. The traditional stories describe him riding his faithful white horse through the night skies. He is also accompanied by helpers who are known as Zwarte Pieten, which translates to 'Black Peters.' Traditionally, the role of the Pieten was to assist Saint Nicholas by carrying the large sacks of gifts and helping to distribute treats and toys to the children. In more recent times, the traditional appearance of these figures has become a topic of public discussion. As a result, the portrayal of the helpers has been changed in many communities to better reflect modern values and ensure the celebration is welcoming for everyone.

When the sun rises on the morning of December 6th, the waiting is finally over. Children rush to their shoes to see what Saint Nicholas has left for them. They typically find them filled with a wonderful mix of presents and special, traditional treats. These edible gifts are a key part of my identity. They often include shiny chocolate coins wrapped in gold foil, sweet and juicy clementines, and classic Belgian sweets like spiced speculoos biscuits, which are often baked in the shape of Saint Nicholas himself. Another favorite is marzipan, a sweet almond paste shaped into colorful fruits and figures. While my customs can vary from one family to another, I am celebrated across all of Belgium. At my heart, the spirit of generosity inspired by a kind bishop from centuries ago remains the same everywhere.
