The story

Sant Jordi - Catalan

Hello! My name is Sant Jordi. I am a very special day that people celebrate in a place called Catalonia. I arrive every year in the spring, when the sun is warm and the flowers are blooming. People look forward to my arrival because it is a happy time for sharing special gifts. On my day, the most wonderful gifts are bright red roses and books filled with amazing stories. It is a day all about love and reading for everyone to enjoy.

Part of my story comes from a legend about a brave knight. His name was George, which is "Jordi" in the Catalan language. The old story tells of how he saved a beautiful princess from a fierce dragon. It is a very exciting tale! After the knight saved the princess, a lovely red rosebush grew from the spot where the dragon’s blood had touched the earth. The roses were as red as can be. This is why giving a rose is such a special tradition on my day.

Today, when I am celebrated, the towns and cities in Catalonia become very lively and fun. The streets are lined with colorful stalls. You can smell the sweet scent of flowers in the air as you walk by. People walk around, looking at all the different books and roses for sale. Men and boys often give a single red rose to women and girls they love. In return, women and girls might give a book as a gift. It is a beautiful way for friends and family to show they care for each other. Sharing these special gifts makes my day feel full of joy.
