Just want Sint-Maarten - Dutch?
Hello! I am a holiday called Sint-Maarten. People in the Netherlands celebrate me each year on the 11th of November. My name comes from a very kind man named Martin who lived a long, long time ago. People tell a special story about him.
Martin was a soldier, and one day he saw a man who was cold and did not have a warm coat. Martin wanted to help, so he shared his own warm cloak with the man. When people celebrate me, they remember his kindness.
On my special evening, when the sun goes down and the sky gets dark, children get ready for fun. They celebrate me by carrying special lights called lanterns. Many children make their own lanterns at school or at home. They decorate them with beautiful, bright colors. With a little light inside, the lanterns glow in the dark as children walk through their neighborhoods.
As the children walk with their glowing lanterns, they go from door to door. At each house, they stop and sing special Sint-Maarten songs for their neighbors. The songs are a happy way to share the celebration. After the children finish singing, they are often given a small, yummy treat. It might be a piece of candy or a fruit. Singing songs and sharing treats is a wonderful way people celebrate me.
