The story

Three Kings' Day in Spain

Hello! I am a special celebration called Three Kings’ Day. In Spanish, my name is Día de los Reyes Magos. People celebrate me on January 6th each year. I help people remember a very old story. It is about three wise kings who followed a bright star in the night sky. The story says the star led them on a long journey to visit the baby Jesus, and they brought him special gifts.

The night before I arrive is a very exciting time, especially for children. On the evening of January 5th, boys and girls get ready for the kings to visit their homes. They find a pair of their shoes and place them carefully by a door or near a window. They hope that when the kings pass by, they will see the shoes and leave a surprise inside for them to find in the morning.

Many children also think about the kings’ long trip. They know the kings and their camels must be very tired and thirsty. So, some children leave out a bowl of fresh water for the camels to drink. They might also leave out some sweet snacks for the kings themselves. It is a kind way to say thank you for the journey they have made.

When children wake up on my day, they rush to see what the Three Kings have left! It is a happy morning filled with fun as they find presents waiting for them. My celebration is also a time for families to be together. Many share a special, round cake called a Roscón de Reyes. In some places, there are big, colorful parades in the streets. People dress up like the kings and ride on floats with music. They smile, wave, and toss candy to all the people watching.
