The story

The Little Stick That Could Roll

Hello. My name is Axle. I am a strong, straight stick. A long, long time ago, it was very hard to move heavy things. People had to push big rocks. They had to pull heavy logs. It made them huff and puff and feel so tired. I was just a little stick, waiting for my very important job. I knew I could help if someone just had a big idea. I was so excited to start my adventure and help everyone.

One sunny day, a very long time ago, around the year 3500 BCE, something wonderful happened. We were in a warm, sunny place called Mesopotamia. A clever person saw a round piece of wood. It was a wheel. They had a super big idea. What if they put me, a strong stick, right through the middle of two wheels? They did it. They pushed me through one wheel, and then another. Suddenly, we were a team. I held my wheel friends together, and we could spin and spin. We could roll, roll, roll all together. It was like magic. I was not just a stick anymore. I was an axle, and I had a very important job to do.

With my two wheel friends, everything became so much easier. We could help people move heavy things from one place to another. We helped them build big, tall buildings. We helped them carry yummy food to their families. Now, I am everywhere. You can find me in your toy cars that go vroom, vroom. I am in the little red wagon you pull at the park. I am even in the big buses that take you to school. I may be small and simple, but I am very strong, and I help the whole world go 'round and 'round.
