The Story of the Moving Stairs
Hello. My name is the escalator, but you can call me the moving stairs. I love to carry people all day long. I take you up, up, up. Then I bring you down, down, down. You don't even have to move your feet. It feels like a little ride. Have you ever ridden on me before? It is so much fun to glide along while I do all the work for you.
A very kind man named Jesse Reno made me. He saw so many people getting tired walking up long, long stairs. He felt sad for their tired legs and thought, “There must be an easier way.”. So he had a wonderful idea for stairs that could move all by themselves. On March 15th, 1892, he drew the plans to create me. My very first job was not in a store, but at a fun amusement park called Coney Island. I was a ride. I would lift people up a small hill, and it made everyone laugh and giggle. It was the best first job a moving staircase could ask for.
Now, I work in all sorts of busy places. You can find me in big shopping malls with lots of bright lights, and in busy airports where planes fly high in the sky. I also live deep underground in train stations. I feel so happy when I help you, your parents, and your grandparents get where you need to go. I love my job because I get to give everyone a little lift every single day. It makes me proud to help so many people go on their way with a smile.
