Just want Fireworks?
WHOOSH! I race toward the stars, a tiny spark climbing into the darkness. Then, with a mighty FIZZ and a glorious BOOM, I blossom in the night. I am Fireworks, and for a moment, I become a flower made of pure light, painting the sky with showers of red, green, and glittering gold. People on the ground look up, their faces filled with wonder as I sparkle and fade. They see my beauty and hear my powerful voice, but most don't know my secret story. It’s a tale that began not as a dazzling light show, but as a happy accident in a mysterious workshop in ancient China, more than a thousand years ago. My journey started with a puff of smoke and a quest for something entirely different, something that had nothing to do with celebrating at all.
My story begins in a time of emperors and dynasties, around the 9th century in China. An alchemist, a sort of scientist and magician combined, was working tirelessly. He wasn't trying to create me; he was searching for a magic potion that would let people live forever. Day after day, he experimented, mixing different ingredients. One fateful day, he combined three simple things: smelly, yellow sulfur; dusty, black charcoal from burned wood; and a salty white powder called saltpeter. He heated the mixture, hoping for a magical drink. But instead of a potion, he created a black, flaky powder that fizzled and burned with incredible speed. He had accidentally made my ancestor, gunpowder! At first, no one knew what to do with this strange new substance. But soon, people's imaginations began to spark. Around the year 1000, someone had a brilliant idea. They stuffed the gunpowder into hollow bamboo stalks and tossed them into bonfires. The stalks would explode with a tremendous 'BANG!'. It was perfect for scaring away bad spirits during the Lunar New Year and other important festivals. I wasn't colorful yet, but I was loud, and I was exciting.

For hundreds of years, I was mostly known for my sound. In the 13th century, stories of my power traveled from China along the famous Silk Road, a long and busy trading route. I arrived in Europe, where kings and queens were fascinated by my loud reports and fiery sparks. I was used in big royal celebrations and to show off their power. But I was still very simple, just a flash of orange and a loud noise. My true transformation into a thing of beauty didn't happen until much later, in the 1830s. A group of clever inventors in Italy, who were like artists of fire, decided to experiment. They were like chefs adding special ingredients to a recipe to see what would happen. They discovered that by mixing different metal salts into the gunpowder, they could make me burst with brilliant, vibrant colors. It was a magnificent discovery! They found that a metal called strontium made me a fiery, passionate red. Barium turned me a brilliant, grassy green. And copper gave me a deep and mysterious blue. At last, I was no longer just a loud bang. I had become a painter's palette for the night sky, ready to create masterpieces of light.
Today, I am the star of celebrations all over the globe. I light up the sky on the 4th of July in America, sparkle during the festival of Diwali in India, and welcome the new year with a spectacular show in cities from Sydney to London. I bring families and friends together. They lay out blankets on the grass or gather on city streets, all looking up at the same sky. Their cheers mix with my booming echoes as I dance above them. It fills me with pride to know that I am part of their happiest moments. Looking back, I see that my story is a reminder of how a surprising discovery, a little bit of science, and a lot of imagination can create something that fills the entire world with light, color, and pure joy.
