The story

I Am a Hot Air Balloon

Hello up there. My name is Hot Air Balloon. I am a very big, colorful bag filled with warm air. I have a little basket that hangs underneath me where people can ride. I love to float gently in the big blue sky. Long ago, people would look up at the birds and wish they could fly too. They dreamed of floating with the clouds, just like me. I was a dream that came true.

My story began a long, long time ago in a place called France. Two brothers, Joseph and Étienne Montgolfier, were watching a cozy fire in 1783. They saw the smoke puff up, up, up into the air. 'Look,' they said, 'the warm air is rising.' They had a wonderful, puffy idea. What if they could catch that warm air inside a giant bag? Would the bag float up just like the smoke? They were so excited. They worked together and built me with big pieces of paper and special cloth. They worked so hard to sew me together, making sure I was strong enough for a big adventure. I was their big, beautiful idea, ready to touch the sky.

Soon, it was time for my very first flight. I was a little nervous but very excited. On September 19th, 1783, my first passengers were not people. They were a fluffy sheep, a quacking duck, and a crowing rooster. They all went for a ride in my basket to make sure it was safe. Whee, we floated. Then came the biggest day of all. On November 21st, 1783, two brave people climbed into my basket. We lifted off the ground and floated high above a city called Paris. Down below, everyone looked so tiny. They cheered and waved. It was the very first time people had ever flown. I felt so proud to carry them through the air.

My first big flight showed everyone that people could fly. It was just the beginning of many sky adventures. Today, people still love to ride in balloons just like me. They float up high to see the beautiful world below. They look at the green trees and tiny houses. I am a quiet and gentle way to travel. I love drifting with the puffy white clouds and being a part of the big, beautiful blue sky. It is my favorite thing to do.
