Just want Instant Noodles?
Hello there. You might know me as a block of dry, wavy noodles tucked inside a crinkly package. I am Instant Noodles, and my story begins with a man who had a very big heart. After a long and difficult time called World War II ended in 1945, many people in Japan were hungry. My creator, a kind man named Momofuku Ando, would walk through the city of Osaka and see long lines of people waiting in the cold, just for a simple bowl of hot noodle soup. Seeing their tired, hungry faces made him feel a deep sadness in his chest. He thought, there must be a better way. He made a promise to himself that he would create a food that was delicious, easy to make, and could be stored for a long time, so no one would have to wait in line like that again.
To keep his promise, Momofuku Ando needed a place to work. So, in 1957, he built a small, simple shed in his backyard in Ikeda, Japan. For one whole year, that little shed became his laboratory. He worked day and night, trying to create me. It was not easy. He tried steaming noodles and then drying them, but they became soggy and mushy when he added hot water. He tried countless recipes for the soup flavor, but none were quite right. Some people told him to give up, but he was filled with persistence. He just knew he could find a way. His big breakthrough came one evening when he watched his wife, Masako, making tempura for dinner. She was frying vegetables and shrimp in hot oil, and he noticed how the oil quickly removed all the water. An idea sparked in his mind like a flash of lightning. He realized that if he flash-fried freshly made noodles, the hot oil would create tiny holes in them, getting all the water out. This would make me dry, crunchy, and able to last for a long time on a shelf. Then, when someone poured hot water over me, the water would rush back into those tiny holes, making me soft and delicious again in just a few minutes. It worked. On August 25th, 1958, I was finally born. He named me 'Chikin Ramen,' and I was ready to help feed the world.
A Noodle's Tale: How I Warmed the World

At first, I was a wonderful new food for the people of Japan. They loved how quickly I could become a warm, satisfying meal. But Momofuku Ando dreamed of me helping people everywhere. In the late 1960s, he traveled to America to show me to food buyers there. He was excited, but he soon noticed a problem. In Japan, everyone had a special ramen bowl and chopsticks, but the American buyers did not. He watched as they looked around, found some paper coffee cups, broke my noodle block into pieces, and put me inside. Then, they poured hot water over me and ate me with a fork. Instead of being disappointed, Momofuku Ando felt another spark of inspiration. He saw that the cup was not a problem; it was the solution. He rushed back to Japan with a new idea: what if I came in my very own waterproof cup, with a fork and everything? After a lot of work designing the perfect container, my cousin was born. On September 18th, 1971, the 'Cup Noodle' was introduced to the world, making me even easier for people to enjoy, whether they were at a desk, on a picnic, or anywhere in between.
My journey has been a long and amazing one. From that little shed in Japan, I have traveled across oceans to almost every country on Earth. I have warmed the tummies of busy students studying late at night and comforted families on cold evenings. I have even traveled to outer space with Japanese astronauts, becoming a warm meal for them as they floated far above the world. I am proof that a simple idea, born from a kind man's desire to help others, can grow to touch the lives of billions of people. I started as a solution to hunger, and I became a friend to anyone needing a quick, warm, and tasty meal. And I am still here today, waiting in my package or my cup, ready to bring you a little bit of warmth and comfort in just three minutes.
