The story

Hello, I'm the Calendar!

Hello. My name is the Julian Calendar. I am very special because I help you know what day it is. Is it your birthday. Is it a holiday. Before I was here, things were very messy. The sunny summer felt like it was in the chilly winter. The pretty spring flowers didn't know when to pop up. People were so confused. They needed a way to keep track of all the days, and that's when my story began. I was made to make everything tidy and neat so everyone could know the right day and the right season.

A long, long time ago, in a sunny place called Rome, a smart leader named Julius Caesar saw how mixed-up all the days were. He wanted to fix it. In the year 46 BCE, he gathered his friends who loved to look at the stars and the big, bright sun. They watched the Earth go around and around the sun and counted all the days. They found out it takes 365 days. So, they made me with 365 days. They also gave me a secret surprise, an extra day every four years. That's called a leap year. My very first day was a happy one. It was January 1st, 45 BCE. I was so excited to start helping.

Once I arrived, I made life so much easier for everyone. Farmers looked at me and knew the perfect time to plant their yummy seeds. Families knew exactly when to get ready for their favorite celebrations. I helped everyone plan their days, weeks, and years. I was so helpful that people used me for over 1,500 years. Wow, that's a long time. Even though there is a new calendar now, my big idea is still helping you today. I was the first calendar to help make time tidy for the whole world.
