The Story of the Shinkansen

A Speedy Hello!

Hello there. My name is Shinkansen, but many people call me the 'bullet train' because I'm so fast. I live in the beautiful country of Japan. My body is long, smooth, and silvery, and when I race between cities, I look just like a silver arrow flying through the air. Whoosh. My job is to carry people from one big city to another in just a few hours. Before I was born, a trip like that could take a whole day. Can you imagine? I was built to make traveling quick and easy, so people could spend more time with their families and friends instead of spending all their time on the road.

The Big Idea

My story began a long time ago, after a big war. The people of Japan were working very hard to make their country a wonderful place again. They needed new, faster ways to get around. That’s when two very smart men had a big idea. One was a clever engineer named Hideo Shima, and the other was a determined leader named Shinji Sogō. They dreamed of a train that could travel faster than any other train in the world. So, in 1959, they started to build special tracks just for me. These tracks were super straight, without any sharp turns or roads crossing them. This meant I could go as fast as a rocket without ever having to stop. Everyone had a very important goal: to have me ready for a huge world party called the Tokyo Olympics in 1964. People from all over the world were coming to Japan, and I was going to help show them how amazing the country was. After years of hard work, my big day finally came. On October 1st, 1964, I made my very first journey from the city of Tokyo to the city of Osaka. I was so excited to finally stretch my wheels and fly down the tracks. It felt like I was soaring.

Connecting the World

From my very first trip, I changed everything. Suddenly, people could live in one city and work in another. A person could visit their grandma for lunch and be back home in time for dinner. I helped businesses grow because people could travel for meetings so easily. I also helped people see more of their beautiful country, from tall mountains to busy cities. I became famous all over the world for being super safe and almost never, ever late. I was so proud. My success showed other countries that super-fast trains were possible. Soon, they started building their own versions of me. I love my job of connecting people, bringing families closer, and showing everyone that when you dream big and work together, you can make amazing things happen.
