The Story of the First Locomotive
Hello. Choo-choo. I am a locomotive. That is a big word for a train. I am big and strong, and I love to roll on my shiny, silver tracks. Before I came along, strong horses had to pull all the heavy things. They would pull big carts filled with rocks and wood. It was very hard work for the horses, and they would get so tired. I was created to help them and make work easier for everyone. I was a brand new idea, and I was so excited to get to work and go chug-chug-chugging along.
My first big puff was so exciting. A very clever man named Richard Trevithick made me. He was my very first friend. He gave me a big, round tummy with a warm fire inside to heat up water. When the water got very hot, it made puffy steam, just like a fluffy white cloud. This steam gave me my power to move. Puff, puff, puff. I will always remember my very first trip. It was on a special day, February 21st, 1804. I chugged and puffed along my track. I pulled ten big, heavy wagons all by myself. I even carried happy people too. Everyone cheered when they saw how strong I was. I felt so proud to help.
After my first big trip, more trains just like me were built. Soon, we were a big train family. We started carrying people on fun adventures to visit family and friends in faraway places. Children could ride on me to see their grandmas and grandpas. Today, my train family is still chugging all over the world. We help carry yummy food for you to eat, fun toys for you to play with, and people going on big adventures. Choo-choo. We love connecting the world and helping everyone get where they need to go.
