The story

My Super Sound Pictures

Hello, I'm Ultrasound. It's so nice to meet you. I am a very special machine, and I have a super-duper job. I use sounds that are as quiet as a whisper to take pictures of things that are hidden inside. It's like having magic eyes. Before I came along, it was a big mystery for doctors to see inside a person's body. They couldn't peek inside to make sure everything was okay. But I changed that. I help doctors see all the amazing things happening inside you, like your wonderful, beating heart. I love being a helper and sharing my secret pictures.

My story began with a very kind doctor named Ian Donald. He was very smart and always wanted to help people feel better. One day, he saw big boats using sound waves, like a gentle hum, to find things deep in the big, blue water. He thought and thought and had a wonderful idea. He said, 'What if I could use sounds to see inside people to help them?'. He and his friends worked together in a busy city called Glasgow. In the year 1956, after lots of trying, they figured out how to make me work. I was born because they were curious and they cared so much about keeping people healthy and safe.

My most favorite job in the whole wide world is taking the very first picture of a baby while it's still cozy and growing in its mommy's tummy. A doctor puts some cool, slippery gel on the mommy's belly, which tickles a little. Then, they use my magic wand to slide around. That's how I get to peek inside and say hello to the baby. I love showing mommies and daddies the first picture of their new little one. It makes me feel so proud and happy to help doctors make sure every baby is healthy and strong before they are even born.
