The story

Quetzalcóatl and the Gift of Corn

This is a story about a kind god named Quetzalcóatl. He had beautiful green and blue feathers, and he could fly through the big, wide sky. Long, long ago, the people of the world were hungry because they did not have corn to eat. Quetzalcóatl felt very sad for them and wanted to help. One day, he saw a tiny red ant carrying a single, golden piece of corn. He knew he had to find out where the ant got the special food. This is the story of Quetzalcóatl and the Corn.

Quetzalcóatl flew down to the little red ant. 'Where did you find that yummy food?' he asked softly. But the little ant kept her secret and would not tell him. So, Quetzalcóatl used his magic. Poof. He turned himself into a little black ant, just her size. Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle went the two ants. He followed the red ant all the way to a giant mountain. She slipped through a tiny crack, and he followed right behind her. Inside, it was a wonderful surprise. The mountain was full of colorful corn—yellow, red, blue, and white. It was a treasure cave of food.

Quetzalcóatl, as a tiny ant, picked up one golden grain of corn. He carried it all the way back to the people. He showed them how to plant the little seed in the soft earth. Soon, a tall green plant grew up, up, up. The plant had yummy corn cobs hiding inside. The people learned how to grow their own food, and they were never hungry again. When you eat sweet, yummy corn, you can remember Quetzalcóatl's special gift. It is a gift for everyone to share.
